The OVA has better action and is quirkier, but has such a weak ending... Universe is more complete and has an epic ending, but the individual episodes aren't as strong. But it does have Nagi, which is a bonus.
Which is the true Tenchi?
Hmm... That puzzles me as well, I did indeed see both those seasons and the Universe one seems to have a more In-Depth Story and believe it or not but it has the VERY FIRST Memory I can remember from my younger days of my first Memory of Ryoko and it was the part where she was lying Unconscious and Tenchi folded his hand to give her some water to help her and it's the oldest Memory I have of ever remembering Ryoko from the old days and it was when I was young and I still cherish those memories very much indeed! X3 At any rate, it seems that the Universe Season has a more In-Depth Story but the other one which is the OVA or first season is very good as well since it seems to fit with the original story as well so i'd have to say that maybe they should blend together somehow but i'm not sure, I just feel that the First Season and the Universe Season are very connected somehow so I can't really decide which has the True Tenchi since maybe they should be blended together somehow since it kinda makes sense.
I wish they blended together for me.... alas, they are distinct. In the first one, Ryoko is a demon sealed beneath the earth. In the second one, she's a space pirate who lands on earth.
Kagato is also way more bad-ass in the OVA.
Like i said, they're both good.
Exactly my thoughts but you have to admit that the Corrupt Jurian King Kagato in the Final Battle with Tenchi was a bit more brutal and Knightly that the First Season fight of Tenchi and Kagato but oh well, as you and I said already they are both absolutely amazing! X3
